OOM Flat Trackers Put On Show At Holmes County Fairgrounds

OOM Media Relations / Saturday, September 5th, 2009
by Bob Sigler

Competitors from throughout the state turned out to support Ohio Outlaw Motorsports inaugural flat track race at the Holmes County Fairgrounds on Saturday night, September 5th. OOM promoted two TT scrambles races at the facility earlier in the season, but Saturday’s event was the first attempt at a small oval short track race for quads and motorcycles. Quad riders were very excited about the paper-clip shaped, clay race course, and turned countless practice laps to help groom the track for racing under the lights.

Two heats set the field for the twelve lap Pro Quad feature, with Millersburg’s Trent Kandel and Derek Davis of Dresden winning the first and second heat respectively. Kandel rocketed off the line on his Thomas Concrete sponsored Honda to lead the opening lap, with Davis and Joel Jacobs on his heels. Although Jacobs and Davis were side-by-side coming out of turn two, they were within striking distance of Kandel, who got out of shape in turn four, and dropped to third. Davis edged a wheel ahead of Jacobs at the line on lap two and took the lead, while Kandel was a close third followed by Marvin Troyer and Craig Shoup.

Derek Davis ran a strong low line riding his SC Racing Apparel and Parts sponsored Yamaha, leaving only the high side for Joel Jacobs to challenge with his Extreme Tec ATV sponsored Honda. Coming in on lap four, Jacobs looped-out exiting turn four, surrendering second spot back to Kandel. Davis would not be denied, turning flawless laps for the remainder of the feature. Further back, Craig Shoup began to edge ahead on his Exodus Cycles sponsored Suzuki, and with four laps to go, Shoup made a spectacular pass taking third spot from Marvin Troyer.

The Pro Quad victory went to Davis, with Kandel second, Shoup third, Troyer fourth and Jacobs rounding out the top five. The Pro Quad crown was just one of two feature wins for Davis, as Derek rode the SC Racing Yamaha in flawless dominant fashion, leading all ten laps of the Sportsman Quad division feature.

Trent Kandel put his Thomas Concrete Honda in victory lane for the Big Bore Smooth Tire Quad division, leading all ten laps, but Big Bore Knobby Tire Quad was a bit more contested. Heat winner Todd Raber of Millersburg had an abysmal start, as Paul Allison led lap one, followed by Josh Jacobs and Raber, who salvaged the first lap, going from the tail to third. Raber edged around Jacobs on lap three, and took the lead from Allison at the halfway mark, winning the feature on his Tarrat Motorsports sponsored Suzuki.
However, Raber couldn’t duplicate his success in the Senior Quad division, managing second place behind Bellville’s Dan Swank who sailed around the oval on his Polaris, while Raber struggled with traction on the ever changing flat surface. Jesse Jacobs of Mt. Vernon won the Open Am Quad feature on the Central Ohio Fabrications sponsored Honda.

As for motorcycle action, St. Louisville’s Jeffery Lowery won both the 250cc Bike and Open Am Bike divisions on a Grey Hogs sponsored Honda, with Jarod VanDerkooi of Mt. Gilead and Hunter Edwards of Mansfield running one and two respectively. Columbia Station’s Joe Baker took the Open Bike victory on his One Eye Customs sponsored Yamaha, with Joe Pittman of Creston second and Billy Smith third on the Dave’s Cycle sponsored Yamaha.

The next Ohio Outlaw Motorsports event will be flat track racing at Lakeville Speedway on Saturday night, September 12th, featuring the Inaugural Tim “Smoothy” Rutherford Memorial Pro Quad feature that pays a $2,000 purse and $1,000 to win. OOM will return to the Holmes County Fairgrounds for a two-day event, with a flat track race on Saturday night October 3rd and TT scrambles on Sunday October 4th.

OHIO OUTLAW MOTORSPORTS ANNOUNCES THE AUGUST 23RD RUTHERFORD MEMORIAL FLAT TRACK RACE AT LAKEVILLE HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 12TH

OOM Media Relations / Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
by Bob Sigler

Ohio Outlaw Motorsports announces the August 23rd Rutherford Memorial flat track race at Lakeville Speedway has been rescheduled for Saturday night, September 12th. Rescheduling of the event is due to a court mandate that prohibits Lakeville Speedway from hosting a Sunday motorsports event in addition to regularly scheduled Friday night stock car racing.

OOM proprietors Adam Campbell and Bob Sigler are disappointed with the rescheduling on short notice, but remain optimistic about better racing conditions at Lakeville under the lights. The Rutherford Memorial Pro Quad race includes a $2,000 purse, paying $1,000 to win. Campbell and Sigler applaud the efforts of Lakeville Speedway to keep the original date, noting that Lakeville did everything imaginable to prevent rescheduling the event. OOM also thanks Eric Ashcraft of All Outdoors Productions for spearheading the Rutherford Memorial and generating the overwhelming sponsorship backing of the unprecedented race.

“This was not an instance where a decision had to be made,” says Adam Campbell, “the situation was completely out of our hands, forcing us to take the best action as quickly as possible, a little over five days before an event that racers have really been looking forward to.”

“We are certainly disappointed,” adds Bob Sigler, “but rest assured in the loyal support of sponsors, race teams, spectators, and are confident they are well aware Ohio Outlaw Motorsports does everything possible to overcome any adversity.”

In order to move the race date to Saturday night, September 12th, OOM must restructure the race program to accommodate a previously scheduled dirt track race in the Buckeye state. Triangle Motorcycle Club hosts a two day half-mile at Richwood fairgrounds the very same weekend, so OOM will not offer the full class listing for motorcycles, including the Pro Bike division.

“Early in the planning stages of the Rutherford Memorial we discussed with TMC the possibility of other circumstances prompting a September 12th schedule conflict,” says Sigler, “Triangle is very understanding of our situation, and we feel the honorable thing is to focus on the quads for this one event, and encourage our motorcycle racers to support the TMC Richwood half-mile.”

OOM will offer the complete quad class listing, but limit the bike program to the regular youth motorcycle divisions and one knobby bike division. Additional schedule changes and amendments include cancellation of the September 5th OOM race at Lakeville, but Campbell and Sigler continue negotiations to add a possible two-day event in early October, hoping to announce that within the next two weeks.

Rescheduling of the Inaugural Tim “Smoothy” Rutherford Memorial to a nighttime race on Saturday, September 12th will change event times to gates opening at 3pm, practice at 5pm with heat races starting at 6:30pm.

Quad Racers Put On Thrilling Show At Lakeville Speedway

OOM Media Relations / Friday, August 14th, 2009

Lakeville stock car fans were treated to a bonus on Friday night, August 14th, as Ohio Outlaw Motorsports brought a field of fifteen Pro Quads to the starting line for a twelve lap feature. The competitors qualified for the Exodus Cycles Pro Quad Shootout by virtue of entering the OOM event at Lakeville the previous Sunday.

The Shootout paid the standard OOM Pro purse of $500 to the top six and $200 to win, but racers agreed to mix up the starting order to give fans the best show possible. The top two from the qualifier agreed to start on the third row, and the remaining riders were put in starting position by way of a random redraw.

Quads were first out for hot laps in the program and had expected a difficult track surface, since it was prepared expressly for stock car racing. After numerous heats and few consolation events for the cars, the quad riders were very excited about conditions of the 3/8 mile oval. The racing line exceeded expectations, with a good bit of rubber down, and moisture in the track by nightfall set the stage for a great race.

Paul’s Trucking sponsored Mike Sheldon of Danville grabbed the holeshot, but Fredericktown’s Matt Brokaw was coming strong from the back row on his Extreme Tec ATV sponsored KTM, edging into second place by lap two. Millersburg’s Trent Kandel also climbed through the field, advancing to fourth place on lap two, behind the SC Racing Apparel & Parts sponsored Yamaha, ridden by Derek Davis of Dresden. Brokaw closed in on Sheldon, trying the high line at one end of the track, and hugging the bottom at the other, as the two battled for the point. Brokaw made the pass on lap five, and then Sheldon came under fire from Davis in a battle for second.

With four laps to go, Thomas Concrete sponsored Trent Kandel and Gambier’s Andrew Hart on the High Desert Dyno Yamaha sandwiched Davis on the high and low side, and continued battling for third position. Sheldon made his #04 as wide as possible for two laps, but Kandel made the pass on the last lap, and Hart followed into third.

Matt Brokaw took his second consecutive OOM feature win, with Kandel, Hart, Sheldon and Davis rounding out the top five. Millersuburg’s Travis Raber put on a good show riding the Tarrat Motorsports Yamaha to a sixth place finish from a second row starting position.

Next for Ohio Outlaw Motorsports will be flat track racing at Lakeville Speedway on Sunday, August 23rd, which is also the $1000 to win, $2000 purse Rutherford Memorial Pro Quad event.

Great Racing By Local Riders At OOM / Lakeville Flat Track

OOM Media Relations / Sunday, June 26th, 2009

Heavy rains and thunderstorms the day before put a damper on track preparation, delaying the start of the inaugural Ohio Outlaw Motorsports event at Lakeville Speedway, but conditions improved as the day progressed, making for some tight battles on the Holmes County dirt track. Competitors of all ages on motorcycles, quads and UTVs from throughout Ohio and neighboring states turned out for the flat track race, the eighth of fourteen scheduled OOM events.

As always, the Exodus Cycles Pro Quad division was hotly contested, with riders chasing the $500 purse, $200 to win, twelve lap feature race. Gambier’s Andrew Hart, no stranger to the OOM victory circle with multiple victories under his belt, was first off the starting line to lead the pack into turn one. In tow were Warsaw’s Derrick Buxton and Derek Davis of Dresden, as Hart was able to open a scant three bike length lead, and no more.

Buxton and Davis ran single file, keeping Hart in sight for the first five laps, but Davis starting working different lines on his SC Racing sponsored Yamaha, and began to challenge the RB Drilling sponsored Yamaha of Buxton for second. The battle for second continued for the rest of the feature, as further back in the pack Millersburg’s Craig Shoup and Mike Sheldon of Danville began to make their way through the field.

Shoup edged his Exodus Cycles sponsored Suzuki around Sheldon on lap five, but on lap eight, Sheldon passed both Shoup and Travis Raber of Millersburg. Hart led every single lap, making no errors in his first experience with Lakeville Speedway, but the second spot was a non-stop battle between Buxton and Davis for the entire race. Davis had the strong drive out of two, going side-by-side with Buxton into three but was unable to capture the position.
Hart took the checkers and the dominant feature win, with Buxton and Davis second and third respectively. Millersburg’s Marvin Troyer finished fourth and Mike Sheldon made a last lap pass into fifth, with Shoup finishing sixth.

The Pro Bike feature was Mt. Vernon’s Austin Conant sailing around the high line right off the start, leading every lap on his Extreme Tec Yamaha. As Conant broke away with the lead, Joe Pittman of Creston and Granville’s Tom Bruck stayed side-by-side in a thrilling duel for position, while Nick Wetler of Millersport and Jesse Bruehler of Nova jockeyed for fourth. Austin Conant was lapping riders at the checkers and the $200 win, with Pittman, Bruck, Wetler and Jim Henson rounding out the top five.

The Valley ATV sponsored Sport UTV division began with yet another twist. Competitors sat abreast on the starting line, facing backwards, and each had to chomp down an entire hot dog at the drop of the green flag, prior to firing up their machines taking off. With foil wrappers tossed aside, Mt. Vernon’s Doug Staats hit the ignition and left the starting area, followed by Fredericktown’s Ronny Flynn and Ron Dye of Centerburg. At the conclusion of one clockwise lap, the UTVs got on the binders, doing a 180 in turn four, and rocketed down the front stretch for twelve traditional laps. Staats led all twelve laps of the Valley ATV Sport UTV division, but a last lap move put Dye in position to finish second ahead of Flynn.

There was no shortage of drama in the Sportsman Quad division, which prohibits sway bars and requires all quads to have knobby tires. Just two laps into the second heat race, Shane Campbell of Frazeysburg swerved to avoid colliding with a looped-out quad, began sliding broadside, caught traction and went flipping through the air above turn four. Campbell was soon on his feet, to the applause and relief of spectators, and hauled his machine to the pits for frantic attempts at repair.

The SC Racing Apparel and Parts sponsored quad of Campbell was repaired enough to make the feature start, setting the stage for a thrilling ten laps. Wooster’s Brent Edington had the lead for the first two laps, but lost traction in turn two, coming to a stop that brought out the red flag. The single-file restart put Campbell into the lead, but Edington was on the move, coming from the tail, passing Taylor Gassor for second on lap five. Campbell had the low line, with Edington sailing around the high side through three and four, as both riders repeatedly drag raced down the back stretch. Despite his hair-raising tumble in the heat race, Campbell was smooth down low, until Edington finally made the top work, passing for the win the final time out of turn four.

Next for Ohio Outlaw Motorsports will be flat track racing at Lakeville Speedway on Sunday, August 9th. The August 9th event also serves to qualify Pro Quad Division riders for an exhibition feature on Friday night, August 14th, to be run in conjunction with the Lakeville Speedway stock car program.

Thrilling Race Under The Lights At OOM Flat Track

OOM Media Relations / Saturday, June 13th, 2009

A good field of competitors on quads, motorcycles and even behind the wheel of UTVs put on a thrilling show at the Ohio Outlaw Motorsports flat track race, Saturday, June 13th, at Hilltop Speedway. The fourth event of a fourteen race schedule, it was the first OOM race under the lights at the high-banked, 3/8 mile, clay stock car track in Millersburg.

The four-wheeled warriors in the Pro Quad division set the grid for the Exodus Cycles $500 feature by virtue of two heat races, the first dominated by Warsaw’s Kenny Rich Junior, on the Greg’s ATV & Cycle sponsored #47 Honda. Leading all six laps of the second heat race was Andrew Hart of Gambier, on the High Desert sponsored #113 Yamaha.

As is typical with dirt track racing, track conditions improved after sunset, as cooling temperatures set the stage for a much anticipated twelve lap showdown. Ashland’s Shane Bretz rocketed off the starting line, hugging the low groove on his Snyder Motorsports sponsored #56 Yamaha, and put the first lap in the books, with Andrew Hart in tow.

With no more than half a bike length between them, Bretz held strong for two more laps, but Hart found an opening, passing with scant inches to spare, taking the lead on lap four. Hart thundered into the lead, but was unable to break away from Bretz, who was edging high and low, looking for a faster line to challenge back for the lead. As Hart and Bretz kept fans on their feet battling for the point, Loudonville’s Dan Butler was on the move, ridding the Exodus Cycles / M. Troyer sponsored Honda. Butler came off the line fifth, and pulled off a spectacular pass into fourth on lap five, where he locked horns with Dresden’s Derek Davis, on the Davis Customs sponsored #991 Yamaha. Butler into third on lap seven, Davis reclaimed it, then Butler took third for good on lap nine, and set sail for the leaders.

Hart and Bretz each wanted the same line through three and four, as Bretz was within striking distance right in Hart’s tracks, but would lose ground trying the high line. Hart was the master of Hilltop, making no mistakes as the laps wound down. Butler had the top two in sight, but ran out of laps, as Andrew Hart took the checkers and the $200 victory in the Exodus Cycles Pro Quad Division, with Bretz and Butler finishing second and third respectively.

The Valley ATV sponsored Open UTV division brought plenty of excitement to the speedway, as Kevin Staats grabbed the holeshot and held the point for the first four laps. Mt. Vernon’s Doug Staats was there to slice into the lead on lap five behind the wheel of his Polaris RZR, but Kevin Staats stuck with the leader, biding his time. Another twelve laps right down to the wire, had Kevin Staats taking the lead on the final lap, edging out Doug Staats at the finish line. Ronny Flynn of Fredericktown and Centerburg’s Ron Dye claimed third and fourth respectively.

All ten laps of the Open Am. Quad feature were Bladensburg’s Scott Harris, but the victory was not without challenges from Mt. Vernon’s Jesse Jacobs on the Central Ohio Fabrications Honda and Wes Gingerich of Apple Creek, on an Exodus Cycles Banshee. Jacobs dropped from second to a fourth place finish, while Gingerich took second, and Mansfield’s Jeff Knackestedt moved up to finish third on the Evans Powersports Yamaha. A good group of competitors turned out to race the oval on 4x4 Quads, and gave race fans a thrilling show. Millersburg’s Jon Gilley took the victory, with second and third to Warsaw racers Brent Sapp and Brian Wilson.

Next for Ohio Outlaw Motorsports are two events in the same weekend, with a TT race under the lights at the Holmes County Fairgrounds, Friday night, June 26th, and a flat track race at Hilltop Speedway on Sunday, June 28th.

Other class winners were 80 Youth Bike: Lance Clevenger; 110 Youth Bike: Josiah Miller, Dundee; Knobby Bike: Ryan Miller, Dundee; 70 Youth Quad: Caleb Martin, Glenmont; 110 Youth Quad: Josh Davis, Warsaw, Davis Customs Apex; Sportsman Quad: Derrick Buxton, Coshocton; Small Bore Quad: Brian Yoder, Millersburg, Redneck Motorsports; Senior Quad: Dan Stotts, Rittman; BB Smooth Quad: Shane Bretz, Ashland, Snyder Motorsports; BB Knobby Quad: Derrick Buxton, Coshocton.

STRONG SHOWING FOR LOCAL RACERS AT HILLTOP TT

OOM Media Relations / Sunday, May 31st, 2009

All photos by Diane Bemiller

The first Ohio Outlaw Motorsports TT Race of the season at Millersburg’s Hilltop Speedway on Sunday, May 31st filled the pits with quad racers from throughout the state. The TT race course utilized most of the Hilltop oval and ducked riders into an infield section of race course that included a chicane, a sweeping right-hand turn and three high-speed jumps.

Warsaw’s Kenny Rich Junior took the lead of the Greg’s ATV & Cycle $500 purse, Pro Quad feature, and checked out, leading all twelve laps to victory. Rich came off the line with a great start, edging past the Extreme Tec Honda of Mt. Vernon’s Dillon Conant.

Millersburg rider Marvin Troyer, a strong competitor and previous feature winner at Hilltop, looped out in the qualifying heats, forcing him to start the feature on the back row. It was a different story in the main event, as Troyer advanced to fourth on the opening lap, and took third from Conant on lap three. The Exodus Cycles Honda of Troyer was soon pressuring Canton’s Scott Zollars, in a tight second place battle that aided Rich in breaking away further with the lead.

Zollars was rock solid on the Camz Quad Specialities Honda, riding flawless and giving Troyer no opening to pass. Out of the turn four banking however, Troyer mounted a strong drive, edging into second place on lap seven. Zollars stayed right with Troyer, and together both riders were gaining slightly on the leader.

The remaining six laps just weren’t enough, as the Greg’s ATV sponsored Honda of Kenny Rich Junior set a blistering pace early in the feature. Rich was well ahead of the rest of the pack with a large enough lead to allow him to cautiously negotiate the racecourse, cruise smoothly to a dominant victory and claim the $200 win.

Troyer held on to second, Zollars third, Conant fourth, followed by Shane Bretz of Ashland on the Snyder Motorsports Yamaha. Bladensburg’s Scott Harris took sixth, followed by Millersburg’s Craig Shoup on the Exodus Cycles sponsored Suzuki.

Sportsman Quad division was the most contested of the day, and that belonged to Kenny Rich Senior, who edged into the lead on the second lap, and never looked back from his Greg’s ATV sponsored Suzuki. Second in Sportsman Quad was Frazeysburg’s Shane Campbell on the Davis Customs Yamaha, Dustin Dickerson rode his Suzuki to third with the Pro Quad Performance Honda of North Canton’s Kyle Barson fourth.

The TT opener also included the Valley ATV sponsored Open UTV division, for side-by-sides, or “utility type vehicles”. All competitors in the division were also sponsored by Valley ATV of Danville, and they put on a thrilling twelve lap feature event, all competitors behind the wheel of Polaris RZRs.

Paul Staats took the early lead, but coming out of turn four a lap later, dishing out taunts and hand gestures, Doug Staats made the pass for the point position going into the chicane. Paul Staats stayed with leader Doug Staats for the next two laps, but was challenged at every turn by Ronny Flynn of Fredericktown. Two laps later, Flynn and Paul Staats were neck and neck across the center chute jump when contact sent Flynn sideways until he flipped inverted, coming to a stop on his side.

Unscathed, Flynn quickly climbed out his Polaris and stood atop the machine, much to the delight of the cheering fans. Flynn’s machine was pushed over upright, showing no serious damage, and he restarted the event, jumping right back into a battle for second with Paul Staats. Flynn made the pass at the crossed flags, and worked every angle trying to reel in the leader, to no avail. At the checkers it was winner Doug Staats, Ronny Flynn second, Paul Staats third and Joe Morrison fourth.

In yet another thrilling event Sunday afternoon, Dan Butler of Loudonville dominated the Big Bore Quad division on an Exodus Cycles sponsored Honda, while Dillon Conant, Shane Bretz, Kenny Rich Senior and Jess Jacobs diced for position for ten laps to second through fifth place finishes respectively. Kenny Rich Senior was back later in the program to score a feature win in the Senior Quad division.

Other class winners were 100 Youth Bike: Jeffrey Lowery, St. Louisville, Grey Hogs Honda;

110 Youth Bike: Brendon Hood, Glenmont; XR100: Jimi Stilson, Perrysville; 50 Youth Bike: Nick Morris, Glenmont, CM Concrete KTM; 70 Youth Quad: Caleb Martin, Glenmont; 110 Youth Quad: Chase Zolman, Mt. Vernon, Works Technology / M & M Trucking; 125 Bike: Jeffrey Lowery, St. Louisville, Grey Hogs Honda; Open Am Quad: Kyle Barson, N. Canton, Pro Quad Honda; Knobby Bike: Scott Moore, Killbuck.

Next event for Ohio Outlaw Motorsports will be a Short Track Race under the lights, on the high-banked Hilltop Speedway oval, Saturday, June 13th.

SPECTCULAR RACING AT HILLTOP FOR OOM SEASON OPENER

OOM Media Relations / Sunday, May 17th, 2009

All photos by Diane Bemiller

The season opening event for Ohio Outlaw Motorsports on Sunday, May 17th was a short track race at Hilltop Speedway, south of Millersburg, Ohio. The flat track race on the high-banked clay oval for motorcycles and quads drew over one-hundred competitors, including some from Michigan and Kentucky.

The Exodus Cycles $500 Pro Quad division had a full field of entries, requiring three heat races to set the sixteen rider lineup for the main event. Gambier’s Andrew Hart, Canton’s Scott Zollars, Jesse Rutherford of Mt. Vernon and Fredericktown’s Matt Brokaw were a tight knit squadron battling for the lead out front in the early laps, until Brokaw’s KTM broke, forcing him to retire to the infield. Hart continued in first on his All Out Throttle sponsored Yamaha, but Rutherford closed the gap on the Howzer Racing Honda, with Zollars in tow.

A couple of good drives down the back stretch just weren’t enough for Rutherford to pass for the lead going into three, and only served to open the door for Zollars, easily in position to capitalize on any mistake from the front two. However, as laps wound down, Rutherford ran a great line out of four, and took the lead from Hart going into turn one. Hart was quick to challenge back for the lead, but ran out of laps as Rutherford claimed the Exodus Cycles Pro Quad feature win, Hart held on to second with Zollars a close third.

Immediately following the Pro Quad feature, the field was inverted according to feature finish position and lined up single file on the front stretch for a six-lap, ‘winner-take-all’ dash for a cash prize.. Feature winner Rutherford was coming hard through the pack, but the dash belonged to Scott Zollars, who was flawless on the Camz Quad Specialty Honda. Zollars blazed around the oval, passing 13 riders in six laps on his way to victory in the Ohio Outlaw Motorsports Pro Quad dash.

The Pro Bike division also raced in a $200 to win feature, $500 purse payable to the top six finishers. Brandon Laursen, Honda mounted rider from Marlette, Michigan, was off to a great start of the 12 lap feature, but Garrettsville’s Ricky Marshall and Galion’s Ben Evans were both aces through one and two, making their way out front. Evans, on a Dave’s Cycle / Rhinehart Morris Racing sponsored Yamaha, soon took the lead from Marshall, who was riding the #41 Dave’s Cycle sponsored Honda, but Evans was unable to check out. The Laursen Racing sponsored #82x Honda of Brandon Laursen was strong in third as Evans and Marshall rode side-by-side, slicing and dicing for the lead. Past the halfway point it was Marshall out front, but Evans tossed the bike sideways, down low in turn one, and came out as the new leader down the back stretch.

Spectators were cheering, yet cringing, as Marshall came right back, passing Evans in turn two, with scant inches between them. Although Evans and Marshall traded paint throughout the feature, neither rider made the mistake or bobble that Laursen would have capitalized on in a flash. Marshall looked to have Evans covered, opening up a bike length lead, but a great drive down the front stretch again, had Evans reclaiming the lead into turn two, just past the white flag. Ben Evans held on, riding his #69f Yamaha to his second Pro Bike feature win at Hilltop, with Marshall second and Laursen third.

Ohio Outlaw Motorsports sponsored a six-lap dash following the Pro Bike feature also, with bikes lined up single file, inverted from where they finished in the feature. This event was not decided until the final lap, when Lucas, Ohio KTM rider Ricky Crist was passed by Blacklick, Ohio’s Ivan Carl on the Dave’s Cycle sponsored #44 Honda, and Carl took checkers, the win, and the bonus cash prize.

Next event for Ohio Outlaw Motorsports will be a TT Scrambles race at Hilltop Speedway on Sunday, May 31st.

OOM Fields A Good Group Of Riders For First Event, Including Lloyd Brothers & Kevin Atherton

OOM Media Relations / Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Race fans were treated to a surprise on Sunday, April 26th at Hilltop Speedway, as a special guest was in attendance for the opening event of Ohio Outlaw Motorsports. Taking the track for practice laps was legendary dirt track pro Kevin Atherton of Michigan, who has won fourteen AMA Grand National Championship races since his pro career began in 1987.

Atherton is no stranger to the high-banked clay ovals of Ohio, having won the Eldora half-mile in 1996, the same season he won on mile dirt tracks in California and Illinois, and half-mile dirt tracks in South Dakota and Maryland.

Lloyd Brothers Motorsports of central Ohio had old friend Kevin Atherton come down to Ohio to help test ride and sort out two Aprilia motorcycles. Upon realizing Ohio Outlaw Motorsports promoters Adam Campbell and Bob Sigler would be prepping Hilltop Speedway expressly for motorcycle and quad practice, Lloyd Brothers and Atherton enjoyed Hilltop Speedway all to themselves the day prior, through negotiations with Hilltop operator Mick Conkle Motorsports.

Very satisfied blasting around the Hilltop oval Saturday on the Aprilias, Atherton, tuners and pit crew of the two thundering Italian motorcycles reported much progress was made. This prompted Lloyd Brothers to return the following day for the OOM event. Easily recognized from countless television appearances over his spectacular career, Atherton was well received with cheers and applause when introduced at the riders meeting on Sunday. When asked during the event, many riders responded they never expected to have the opportunity to ride next to national number twenty-three. There was no shortage of smiling faces and head shaking whenever Atherton would grab a handful of throttle, stand the Aprilia on is rear wheel coming out of turn two, and ride a wheelie down the entire back stretch.

Ohio Outlaw Motorsports promoters Bob Sigler and Adam Campbell were equally thrilled with the rider turnout for the open practice session, which drew about eighty-five motorcycles and quads and was the first of fourteen events scheduled for the 2009 racing season. In response to strong encouragement and support from sponsors Exodus Cycles of Millersburg and Greg’s ATV & Cycle of Coshocton, the practice session gave riders of every skill level the opportunity to ride not only the Hilltop Speedway oval, but a TT scrambles course that traverses the infield, and over jumps.

Beginning with the Friday night stock car races, the weather held true to forecast, providing an exciting weekend for motorsports and dirt track racing. The open practice began Sunday around two o’clock on the oval track, switched to the TT course around four, and concluded shortly after six. “We worked very hard preparing for this weekend,” says Adam Campbell, “but it was a team effort, and credit for the success is shared equally with our skilled and hard-working staff.” “There is no guarantee the preparation will pay off, it all depends on support from the sponsors, racers and fans,” Bob Sigler notes, “we certainly had support from all three this past weekend, in a big way, and are anxious to build on that success and continuing refining our program as we look ahead to our first race of the season.”

With open practice in the books, the first Ohio Outlaw Motorsports race will be a flat track for motorcycles, quads and UTVs on Sunday, May 17th at Hilltop Speedway, with classes of competition open to youth and adults. Ohio Outlaw Motorsports pro bike and pro quad classes feature a five-hundred-dollar purse for the top six riders, paying two-hundred-dollars to the feature winner.
